Modern Express News (Reporter Xu Suning) China is currently in a stage of rapid population aging, and the elderly's demand for professional and high-quality health services is becoming increasingly urgent. At this year's National Two Sessions, Han Feng, a deputy to the National People's Congress and the dean of the School of Pharmacy at Nanjing Medical University, suggested further improving the higher education system for geriatrics and strengthening the cultivation of clinical practice abilities for students majoring in geriatrics.

Han Feng

Han Feng introduced that currently, doctors in geriatrics in China generally mainly receive conventional medical education and training, lacking a tailor-made specific training system. Most of the key members of the geriatric medicine department are selected from various internal medicine specialists, mainly those specializing in cardiology, neurology, respiratory medicine, etc. He suggested that medical colleges and universities should be encouraged to offer undergraduate programs in geriatrics, and certain policy preferences should be given in terms of enrollment and employment to further improve the higher education system for geriatrics.
Han Feng said that elderly patients have an increased risk of chronic diseases and comorbidities of chronic diseases. They often take multiple medications every day, and the decline in the functions of important organs increases the risk of drug interactions and the incidence of adverse reactions. The treatment process requires a careful and comprehensive assessment by specialist physicians. This requires more specialized training in specific fields rather than being competent merely through rotational training in internal medicine. For this reason, he suggested that relevant universities be encouraged to build a "5+3" integrated geriatric medicine talent cultivation model based on their own conditions and the disciplinary characteristics of geriatric medicine. They should make overall arrangements for the five-year undergraduate education and the three-year master's professional degree postgraduate education and training process, as well as the teaching of postgraduate degree courses and theoretical courses for standardized training of resident physicians. Promote the organic integration of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in geriatrics, basic medical courses and clinical medical courses, as well as professional courses and humanistic quality courses. At the same time, focusing on the clinical diagnosis and treatment characteristics of geriatrics and the rational use of drugs by elderly patients, we will promote the reform of the clinical practice teaching system for geriatric medicine students, implement early clinical practice, multiple clinical practices, and repeated clinical practices, and strengthen the standardized training of students' clinical thinking ability in the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases and clinical operations, so as to contribute to the health of the elderly through the cultivation of high-level talents.
